What is Grogg?

Have you ever wondered why they call that delicious caramel, scotch flavored coffee Highlander Grogg? What does the word, "Grogg", even mean? 

Let me take you back to 1740, on a massive British Navel Ship sailing the stormy, unpredictable seas. Life was brutal for these sailors. Heavy labor, harsh discipline, and cramped quarters. Their water supply was infected by bacteria and algae, making it useless for drinking. Admiral Edward Vernon would walk the ship with a long, heavy, grogram cloak, giving him the nickname "Old Grog". One day, he ordered that the daily rum ration be diluted with water to prevent drunkenness. This new mixed drink became known to the sailors as "grog". A term that continues to be used for rum or scotch mixed beverages. 

"Grog" was a source of cheer for the weary sailors. A time of reprieve offering them warmth, comfort, and camaraderie. Over time, "grog" found its way into pub culture, becoming a nostalgic term for a mixed rum or scotch beverage that represented comfort and warmth on stormy days.

The term "Highlander" comes from the romanticized Scottish Highlands. The deep green mountainscape, dark skies, and dramatic sea. A term known for mythical tales, poetry, and cozy hearths. 

Both terms "Highlander" and "Grogg" embody the feeling of a cup of Highlander Grogg coffee. It's warming, comforting, dreamy, and cozy.
